Back up your ChatGPT history. Properly.

Your conversations live on one company's servers until the day they don't. Export them, verify the backup actually contains everything, and keep a copy in formats you can read forever. Two minutes, entirely in your browser.

The .zip from OpenAI, or the conversations.json inside it. Or click to browse.

Nothing is uploaded. Verification and downloads run entirely in your browser.

Three steps to a real backup.

  1. 1

    Request your export

In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data. OpenAI emails you a download link within minutes. The zip contains conversations.json: your entire history.

  2. 2

    Verify it here

Drop the zip on this page. We parse every conversation in your browser and show you exactly what your backup contains: how many conversations, how many messages, and the date range, so you know it is complete before you rely on it.

  3. 3

Keep it in formats that last

Download a markdown vault: one clean file per conversation that opens in any editor, Obsidian, or Notion. Plus your raw JSON copy. Formats that will still open in twenty years.

A backup from last month is already out of date.

Every export is a snapshot. The conversations you have tomorrow are not in it, and remembering to re-export every few weeks is how backups quietly die. MemoryPlugin keeps a continuously synced copy of your ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini history: import once, and new conversations keep syncing on their own, searchable from inside every AI you use.

Questions.

How do I export my ChatGPT data?
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Data Controls > Export Data and confirm. OpenAI emails you a link to a zip file. It contains conversations.json with your full chat history, plus your account details. The link expires after 24 hours, so download it promptly.
Does the export include everything?
It includes all your conversations and messages. It does not include your saved memories, custom GPTs, or uploaded files. For memories, ask ChatGPT to write out what it remembers about you and save that separately.
Is my data uploaded to this site?
No. The verification and all downloads happen entirely in your browser. Your conversations never leave your device.
How often should I back up?
Every few weeks if you rely on your history, and always before deleting your account, closing a subscription, or a big platform change. Or skip the routine entirely with a continuously synced copy.
Why markdown?
Markdown is plain text: it opens in any editor, imports into Obsidian and Notion, survives every platform, and is diff-able and searchable. It is the most future-proof format for conversational text.
